WeChat (微信) is China's default social layer: chat with hotels and guides, scan restaurant menus, open metro and ticket mini-programs, and pay with WeChat Pay. Treating it as a pure Alipay clone is why first-timers get stuck.

Install and switch to English before you fly
- Download official WeChat from your home App Store / Play Store (keep store region outside mainland China).
- Register with any working phone number + SMS.
- Me › Settings › General › Language → English.
- Add a profile photo and real name spelling that matches your passport — hotels and KYC care.
Do this on home Wi-Fi. Inside China, app updates and SMS can get flaky without a solid eSIM / data plan.
Passport KYC (real-name) — finish early
Payment and many mini-programs expect identity verification. In Me › Services › Wallet (or Account security prompts), choose passport, upload a clear bio-page photo, and complete the selfie / liveness check in good light.
- Name spelling must match the passport and the card you will bind.
- Blurry scans and glare fail repeatedly — retake outdoors or under bright lamps.
- If KYC loops three times, stop and try again on stable China Wi-Fi/eSIM, or finish Alipay first and retry WeChat later.
Link a foreign card to WeChat Pay
- Connect to a network that can reach Chinese payment endpoints (China eSIM, airport Wi-Fi, or hotel Wi-Fi — VPNs sometimes break card-add).
- Me › Services › Wallet › Bank Cards › Add Card.
- Visa / Mastercard / common international networks are the usual tourist path; prepaid and some fintech cards fail often.
- Complete any bank 3-D Secure / SMS from your issuer.
- Make a tiny test purchase (convenience store water) to confirm the wallet works.
Fees and caps change — treat published tourist-pay limits as approximate and confirm in-app. Keep Alipay ready as the smoother backup wallet.
What WeChat is for day to day (beyond paying)
- Chat — hotel front desks, drivers, and local guides live here. WhatsApp will not replace it on the ground.
- Scan to order — many restaurants put menus and ordering inside a WeChat page or mini-program.
- Mini-program dock — pull down on Home to search Metro QR, Trip.com, Meituan, Damai tickets, and more.
- Translate — long-press chat bubbles or use built-in translation where offered.
Blue merchant QR codes are the tourist-pay path. Personal green P2P / red-packet flows often stay locked without a mainland CNY balance — don't plan tips that way.
Common breaks and fixes
- "Card cannot be used" — delete card, switch off aggressive VPN, use China data, re-add; try another Visa/Mastercard.
- New account risk checks — some accounts need an existing WeChat user to verify; start Alipay in parallel so you can still pay.
- Payment QR expires — codes need a live data connection; keep eSIM data on in metro stations.
- Hotel only replies on WeChat — normal. Screenshot the Chinese address for Didi.
When a local still helps
If KYC or card binding burns your first evening, a short local companion block can walk the setup with you, then start the real city. Or post your trip and let a verified guide handle the first restaurant scan and metro mini-program while you watch once.
