A mini-program (小程序) is a lightweight service that runs inside WeChat or Alipay. Locals use them for metro ride codes, bike unlocks, food delivery, museum tickets, and concert queues. Travelers who only install "big apps" miss half the country.

How to find and pin a mini-program
- In WeChat: pull down on the Home tab → search bar → type an English or Chinese name (e.g. "Metro", "Meituan", "Trip.com", "大麦").

- Open once, then star / add to My Mini-Programs so it sits in the pull-down dock offline-ish.
- Prefer scanning an official poster QR at stations and venues — deep-links beat guessing names.

- City Metro / Bus ride code — generate a QR, scan at the gate; works in most major cities once location/city is correct.
- DiDi — ride-hailing without a separate app install.

Payments inside minis (blue QR logic)
Checkout usually inherits WeChat Pay or Alipay. Look for merchant checkout that accepts your linked foreign card. Personal P2P-style green QR flows are the wrong mental model for tourists.
If pay fails, fix the host wallet first — not the mini. No wallet, no mini.
Event & attraction tickets via mini-programs
Many venues push ticketing into WeChat. Use passport as ID type, match spelling exactly, and screenshot the QR offline.
