Guilin exists for one reason above all: the karst scenery. The limestone towers, mirror-still rivers, and misty mornings have inspired Chinese painters for centuries, and seeing them in person lives up to the hype.

The city itself is pleasant and green, with lakes, parks, and signature peaks rising right in town, but its real value is as a launchpad. From here you reach the Li River, the dramatic Longji terraces, and the relaxed riverside town of Yangshuo. It is a nature-and-scenery trip more than a city break.

• Li River cruise: The signature experience, a multi-hour boat ride from Guilin down to Yangshuo past the most famous karst peaks. Book the daytime cruise for the best scenery.
• Longji Rice Terraces: Spectacular layered hillside terraces around Ping'an and Dazhai, a couple of hours from the city, especially stunning when flooded or golden.

Guilin has its own airport (KWL) with domestic flights and some regional links, plus high-speed rail connecting it to Guangzhou, Nanning, and beyond. The high-speed train is a comfortable way to arrive from southern hubs.

Within the city, sights are reachable by taxi, ride-hailing, and bus. The Li River cruise and the Longji terraces require advance arrangement or a tour, since both involve travel outside the city. Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) offer the best balance of comfortable weather and lush green scenery. The rice terraces are most photogenic when flooded in late spring and golden before the autumn harvest.

Summer is hot, humid, and rainy, though the rivers run fuller and the karst looks especially dramatic in mist. Winters are cool and quieter, sometimes hazy, with thinner crowds. Misty days can actually enhance the classic Li River look, so do not write off cloudy weather.

Plan two to three days for the region: one for the Li River cruise to Yangshuo, one for the Longji rice terraces, and time in or around Guilin city for the caves and lakes. Many travelers cruise to Yangshuo and stay there a night or two before returning.

In Guilin, stay near the central lakes and pedestrian streets for dining and easy access. Mid-range hotels run roughly US$25 to US$80 a night; confirm current details when booking.

Guilin's best experiences sit outside the city, and getting to the Li River pier or the Longji terraces, then back, eats up time if you do it alone.
