Meituan & Dianping for Foreigners (2026)

• Dianping — discovery. Search a neighborhood, sort by rating, open a restaurant page, read photos and the "recommended dishes" list. Think Yelp + Google reviews, but denser and more local.
• Meituan — doing. Delivery to your hotel, group-buy vouchers (团购), movie tickets, sometimes hotel and attraction add-ons. Many restaurant pages open inside Meituan too.
• Ele.me — another delivery network; useful if Meituan has thin coverage near your hotel.

On a short trip you can live without them if a guide orders for you. On a week or more, Dianping alone is worth learning — it stops you walking into tourist-trap restaurants on the main square.

Neither Meituan nor Dianping is a payment method by itself for most tourists. Checkout almost always opens Alipay or WeChat Pay. If those wallets aren't working, the food apps won't either.

1. Finish Alipay (and ideally WeChat Pay) setup before or on day one.
2. Install Meituan and/or Dianping from your home app store before you fly (Chinese app stores and SMS codes are harder once you're in China).
3. Prefer signing in with a method that already works — WeChat or Alipay login often beats inventing a fresh account with a foreign number.

If registration loops on SMS verification with your home number, stop fighting it: use Dianping in a browser for research, or let a local place the Meituan order. That is a normal traveler outcome, not a failure.

Travelers often search for "how to link Alipay to Dianping." In practice you usually don't bind cards inside Dianping. You authorize the existing wallet at checkout:

1. Open Dianping or Meituan and add items / open a group deal / start delivery.
2. At pay, choose Alipay or WeChat Pay.
3. Confirm the amount in that wallet (face / fingerprint / password).
4. If the wallet asks for passport or card verification again, finish it there — not inside Dianping.

If Alipay opens but the payment fails, fix the wallet (card limit, bank block, incomplete KYC) using our payments guide, then retry. Linking a second foreign card inside Alipay is more reliable than hunting a "Dianping card settings" screen that may not exist for tourist accounts.

1. Allow location (or pin your hotel on the map).
2. Search the area name, a dish, or a cuisine (e.g. "hot pot", "BBQ", or a famous local specialty).
3. Sort by rating or "nearby," then open places with many recent reviews and photos of actual plates — not just storefront selfies.
4. On the restaurant page, look for 推荐菜 (recommended dishes). Screenshot those names; your guide or the waiter can order from the list.
5. Cross-check distance: a 4.8 rating 40 minutes away is worse than a busy 4.5 next door when you're hungry.

This is how you chase regional specialties — Qingyuan chicken in Guangdong, Chifeng lamb in Inner Mongolia, Guizhou sour-fish soup — without speaking Chinese. Search the dish name, filter to the city you're in, then follow the photos.

Delivery is the hardest part for foreigners: addresses are Chinese, couriers call in Chinese, and building access can confuse everyone.

• Best path: ask hotel reception for the Chinese address + a WeChat contact, or have your local guide place the first order while you watch.
• Pin the hotel precisely; add the room number in the note field if the UI allows.
• Stay near a lobby pickup point the first time — many hotels prefer delivery at reception.
• Expect small minimum orders and a delivery fee; peak dinner hours run late.

If the courier calls and you can't talk, walk to reception with the order screen open. Staff deal with this daily.

Skip DIY Meituan if: account creation keeps failing, you only have two nights in a city, or you want regional specialties ordered correctly the first time.
