Itinerary Overview
Located in the Patagonian region of Argentina, El Calafate is centered around the Perito Moreno Glacier, connecting surrounding lakes, canyons, and nature reserves. This route features classic experiences such as glacier hiking, canyon exploration, and wildlife watching. With a tightly scheduled daily itinerary and convenient transportation, it is ideal for photography enthusiasts and nature explorers.
Day 1: First Glimpse of Perito Moreno Glacier – Breathtaking Panoramas & Beginner Hiking
- Morning: Perito Moreno Glacier Viewpoints
Head straight to the western viewpoint upon arrival. Choose either "Mirador Los Cóndores" or "Mirador Bahía Punta Bandera" for a sweeping view of the entire glacier. Arrive before 9:00 AM to avoid crowds and enjoy softer lighting, perfect for capturing ice calving moments.
- Noon: Light Hike on the Glacier Trail (Sendero de los Cóndores)
Trek 1.5 km south along the wooden boardwalk to get up close with the glacier's textures and blue ice caves. Several viewing platforms are set along the way, offering great opportunities to photograph the contrast between the glacier and Lago Argentino.
- Afternoon: Glacier Boat Tour (Nautica Safari)
Board a boat departing from the southern shore of Lago Argentino to cruise around the glacier's front. The journey lasts about 1 hour, allowing you to witness ice chunks breaking off and falling into the lake. A windbreaker is recommended.
Day 2: In-Depth Perito Moreno Experience – Ice Trekking & Glacier Science
- Morning: Ice Trekking (Mini Trekking on Perito Moreno)
Join an officially authorized ice trekking tour (advance booking required). Equipped with professional crampons and a helmet, you'll climb the glacier surface under a guide's supervision. The ~2-hour excursion focuses on experiencing ice crevasses, ice caves, and glacial meltwater streams.
- Afternoon: Glacier Ecology & Education (Glaciarium Museum)
Return to town to visit the Glaciarium Museum. Interactive exhibits explain glacier formation and the impacts of climate change. The museum features simulated ice caves and a 3D cinema, making it a great fit for families and science enthusiasts.
Day 3: Upsala Glacier & Northern Lakes Secrets – Boat Expedition & Nature Reserve
- Morning: Northern Lake Boat Tour (Lago Norte Tour)
Depart from the El Calafate port heading north, crossing the main channel of Lago Argentino to reach the Northern Lakes (Lago Norte). The ~3-hour cruise offers views of the Upsala Glacier's terminus and floating icebergs. Opt for the upper deck for the best sightseeing experience.
- Afternoon: Estancia Cristina
Disembark at the historic century-old ranch on the eastern shore of the Northern Lakes. Visit the ranch museum to learn about Patagonian nomadic history. You can take a short hike to a canyon viewpoint for panoramic views of Upsala Glacier, or ride a 4x4 vehicle deeper into the ranch grounds.
Day 4: Torres del Paine National Park (Chilean Border) – One-Day Cross-Border Hike
- Morning: Cross-Border Bus to Torres del Paine
Take a bus from El Calafate across the Andes Mountains to Chile's Torres del Paine National Park (ensure you have a Chilean visa in advance or check visa-exemption policies). Focus your visit on the "Lago Grey" viewpoint to photograph Grey Glacier and icebergs floating on the lake.
- Afternoon: Grey Glacier Hike (Sendero Mirador Grey)
Hike along the lakeshore trail for 2 hours to reach the Grey Glacier viewpoint. Get up close to the glacier's terminus and the black moraines formed by meltwater. For a quicker return, you can opt for a boat transfer (additional fee applies).
- Evening: Return to El Calafate
We recommend booking a cross-border bus ticket after 18:00 to ensure ample time for exploration. Carry your passport for the border crossing, and check border operating hours in advance.
Day 5: El Chaltén Light Hike – Fitz Roy Peak & Laguna de los Tres
- Morning: Bus to El Chaltén
Take an early morning bus (~3 hours) to El Chaltén, known as the "Hiking Capital of Argentina." Upon arrival, head directly to the starting point of the "Laguna de los Tres" trail, the most iconic route near El Calafate for viewing Cerro Fitz Roy.
- Afternoon: Laguna de los Tres Hike
The round-trip covers approximately 8 km with a 600-meter elevation gain, taking 3–4 hours. At the end, the lake perfectly reflects Fitz Roy and the surrounding peaks, making it a signature photography spot in Patagonia. Bring trekking poles and a windbreaker; gear rentals are available at the trailhead.
- Evening: Return to El Calafate
The last bus from El Chaltén to El Calafate usually departs around 18:00, so verify the schedule in advance. If time is tight, shorten your hike to "Laguna Capri," which still offers stunning views of Fitz Roy.
Route Overview & Tips
- Physical Requirements: Day 2's ice trekking and Day 5's Fitz Roy hike require moderate fitness. The rest of the itinerary focuses on sightseeing and short walks.
- Time Management: Allocate separate full days for Torres del Paine and El Chaltén. We recommend adjusting the itinerary order based on the season (note that northern lake routes may be suspended in winter).
