Nanning is greener and more laid-back than most Chinese capitals, with a year-round warm climate and a strong subtropical feel. It is the political and cultural center of Guangxi and home to a large Zhuang ethnic population, which gives the city a distinct character in its food, markets and festivals.

Most foreign travelers use Nanning strategically. It is the obvious gateway to the multi-tiered Detian Waterfall, one of Asia's largest transnational falls, and the main jumping-off point for overland travel to Vietnam. Add easy high-speed rail to Guilin, and Nanning becomes a logical hub for a southern China and cross-border itinerary. As a city it is pleasant and inexpensive, even if its sights are modest.

In the city, a modern metro and cheap Didi rides cover the main areas. The big sights, though — Detian Waterfall and the border region — are well outside the city and awkward by public transport. For these, a private car with an English-speaking driver is by far the most practical and comfortable choice.

Nanning is warm to hot year-round thanks to its subtropical location. Summers (May to September) are hot, very humid and rainy, falling within the regional wet season, while winters are mild and short. The greenery is at its most vivid in the warmer months, but the heat and rain can be tiring.

The city itself needs only one day. Most travelers budget two to three days based in Nanning so they can add a full day out to Detian Waterfall and perhaps the Friendship Pass, or use the city as a stepping stone toward Guilin and Yangshuo.

Stay in the central Chaoyang or Langdong areas near the metro, where you are close to restaurants, night markets and transport. Hotels here are modern and affordable.
