Amap (高德地图, also called Gaode) is China's dominant navigation and transit app. Even with a working VPN or HK-exit eSIM, Google Maps often shows wrong walking paths, weak transit detail, and POIs that don't match reality.

Install before you land
- Search Amap / Gaode Map in your home store and install the official build.
- Set your phone language to English, then reopen Amap so menus flip where supported.
- Allow location permission — transit ETAs and "nearby" need it.
- Optional login (Apple / local account); navigation works without an account for basic use.
Download while you still have unrestricted app-store access. Updates inside China may need a non-mainland store region or solid data — see the internet guide.
Offline maps (English UI hides the menu)
Offline packs save you in subway tunnels and mountain towns. The catch: some English UI builds bury or hide Offline Maps.
- Temporarily switch the app/phone toward Chinese if you cannot find Offline Maps.
- Me › Offline Maps (离线地图) › pick your city/province › download (~hundreds of MB per region).
- Enable auto-update when on Wi-Fi, then switch language back.
Turn-by-turn and many POIs work offline; live traffic and some layers need data.
How to search and navigate like a visitor
- Search English names, pinyin, or paste Chinese from your hotel WeChat.
- Choose mode: Walk, Bus/Metro, Drive, Ride, or Taxi estimate.
- For metro, read exit letters and transfer walking times — this is where Amap beats Google hard.
- Use Nearby for toilets, cafés, and ATMs when you are already mid-walk.
Apple Maps is also strong in China if you prefer a native iOS feel; many travelers still keep Amap for transit detail and address copy.
Copy Chinese address → Didi / taxi
Open the POI → copy the Chinese address or name → paste into Didi's destination field (or show the screen to a taxi driver). This single habit removes most "driver doesn't speak English" pain.
Save your hotel as a favorite on night one. Airport and station pickups: pin the correct terminal/entrance, not the city-center hotel pin you used yesterday.
Citywalk and discovery layers

When to hire a driver instead of navigating yourself
Self-nav shines inside metro cities. For Great Wall sections, airport chaos with luggage, or multi-stop days with seniors/kids, a car charter or HeroGuide bid beats wrestling Amap while jet-lagged.

Does Google Maps work in China?

Is Amap available in English?
