Southern China Itinerary: Guilin, Yangshuo and the Li River

Karst peaks, river cruises and rice terraces, with a Guangzhou or Zhangjiajie extension.

Updated 2026

The classic image of China, jagged green peaks rising from a misty river, lives in the south around Guilin and Yangshuo. A Li River cruise between the two is one of the country's great journeys, and the countryside around Yangshuo is made for cycling, bamboo rafting and lazy days among the karst. It is an easy, beautiful region that suits first-timers and photographers alike.

This 7-9 day plan centres on Guilin and Yangshuo, then offers two extensions: the modern Cantonese gateway of Guangzhou (with onward Hong Kong access), or the surreal sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie. Pick one based on your taste. As always, confirm current cruise schedules and prices before booking.

Itinerary at a glance

  • Days 1-2 — Guilin: arrival, city parks, Reed Flute Cave, evening river lights.
  • Days 3-5 — Yangshuo: Li River cruise, cycling, Yulong River raft, rice terraces.
  • Days 6-8 — Extension: Guangzhou and Hong Kong gateway, or Zhangjiajie's pillars.
  • Day 9 — Departure: from Guilin, Guangzhou or Zhangjiajie depending on your route.

Day-by-day breakdown

  • Days 1-2 — Guilin: Settle in with the city's parks, the Reed Flute Cave and the illuminated Sun and Moon Pagodas at night. Guilin works as a gentle base before the river.
  • Days 3-5 — Yangshuo: Take the famous Li River cruise down to Yangshuo, the section featured on the 20-yuan note. Base yourself in town, then cycle the Yulong River valley, take a bamboo raft, climb a viewpoint at sunset, and consider a day trip to the Longji rice terraces.
  • Days 6-8 — Extension (choose one): Take a fast train to Guangzhou for dim sum, Cantonese culture and an easy onward hop to Hong Kong; or fly to Zhangjiajie to walk the glass bridges and towering sandstone columns of the national forest park.
  • Day 9 — Departure: Fly home from whichever city your extension ends in.

Getting around

Guilin and Yangshuo are linked by the Li River cruise (downstream) and by road or fast train (about an hour). Yangshuo itself is best explored by bike, scooter or raft. High-speed rail connects Guilin to Guangzhou in roughly two to three hours, and Guangzhou links easily to Hong Kong. Zhangjiajie is reached by a short flight. A local driver helps for the rice terraces and Zhangjiajie's spread-out park entrances. See our China transport guide, and for the scenic legs a Guilin-Yangshuo private tour or Zhangjiajie private tour can carry the logistics.

Best time to go & how long

April to October is the green, lush season around Guilin, with the karst at its most photogenic and the rice terraces filling out by early summer; autumn brings the golden harvest. Summer is hot and can bring rain that adds atmospheric mist to the river. Winter is cool and quiet with bare terraces. Seven days covers Guilin and Yangshuo with one extension comfortably; nine days lets you slow down. Our best time to visit China guide has the seasonal detail.

What it costs

The Guilin-Yangshuo region is affordable. Budget travellers manage on roughly US$45-65 a day; mid-range comfort with the river cruise, bikes and a guide runs US$110-180 a day. The Li River cruise is the main single cost in this region; a Zhangjiajie extension adds flights and multi-day park tickets, while Guangzhou's costs are mostly food and a comfortable hotel. Treat all figures as general estimates and confirm current prices. See our China budget and cost guide for more.

Make it easy: book a local guide

Southern China is relaxed, but a local guide unlocks the best of it: the right cruise boat, the back-lane cycling routes around Yangshuo, the timing for the Longji terraces, and the navigation of Zhangjiajie's sprawling park. On HeroGuide you post your trip and verified local guides and drivers bid on it, so you compare real quotes from people who actually know the river and the karst. Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Li River cruise worth it?

Yes, it is the signature experience of the region. The four-to-five-hour stretch from Guilin to Yangshuo passes the most dramatic karst scenery in China. On misty or sunny days alike it is memorable; a shorter bamboo raft on the quieter Yulong River near Yangshuo is a good lower-cost alternative.

Should I add Guangzhou or Zhangjiajie?

Choose Guangzhou if you want city culture, famous Cantonese food and an easy gateway onward to Hong Kong. Choose Zhangjiajie if you want more dramatic nature and the towering sandstone pillars. They sit in different directions, so most travellers pick one.

How do I get from Guilin to Hong Kong?

The simplest route is a high-speed train from Guilin to Guangzhou, then onward rail or a short flight to Hong Kong. Check current cross-border entry and visa requirements for Hong Kong, as they can differ from mainland China rules.

Is Yangshuo too touristy?

The main West Street is busy and commercial, but step a few minutes out by bike and you are among quiet rice fields, water buffalo and karst peaks. Base outside the town centre or cycle the Yulong valley to escape the crowds.

When are the Longji rice terraces at their best?

Late spring brings the flooded, mirror-like terraces; early summer is lush green; autumn turns them gold before the harvest. Winter is bare. A day trip from Guilin or Yangshuo reaches them, though the drive is winding, so an early start helps.
